When I first started watching Julie and the Phantoms, I didn’t really know what to expect. I didn’t expect to enjoy the goofy little musical drama/comedy so much and I certainly didn’t expect to binge it all in one day but it was just that good!
Julie and the Phantoms follows titular character Julie (Madison Reyes) and a boyband from the ‘90s called Sunset Curve that died after eating bad hot dogs (I’m not joking) and came back as ghosts when Julie finds their merchandise in a box of her late mother’s stuff.
The three boyband members Luke (Charlie Gillespie), Reggie (Jeremy Shada), and Alex (Owen Joyner) soon find out that Julie is the only one that can see or hear them unless they’re playing music, then everyone can hear them and the series only gets crazier from there.
While the plot can be a bit convoluted and nonsensical and the humor can be a bit childish, the show overall works surprisingly well and the musical numbers are quite catchy.
Furthermore, the cast are all great singers and Madison Reyes in particular has an incredible powerful voice and will surely have other singing opportunities in the future.
Overall, Julie and the Phantoms is a heartwarming, funny, and somewhat ridiculous TV show with great music and an incredibly talented cast. If you haven’t watched it yet, you can catch up on all 9 episodes of season 1 on Netflix.
