Atypical on Netflix is a funny, engaging, and relatable show with an endearing cast of characters that are easy to get invested in.
Atypical follows Sam Gardner (Keir Gilchrist), an 18-year-old boy with autism trying to navigate the ups and downs of high school.
Sam’s family, including his sister Casey (Bridget Lundy-Paine), his mom Elsa (Jennifer Jason Leigh), and his dad Doug (Michael Rapaport) all play a big part in the show, as well as his therapist Julia (Amy Okuda), and his best friend/coworker Zahid (Nik Dodani).
The unique cast of characters has their own rich storylines from Casey’s track career causing her to transfer schools to Elsa cheating on Doug and the aftermath of that infidelity to Julia’s pregnancy and Sam trying to figure out romance.
While I’m by no means an expert on the subject, I think the show does a good job of portraying an autistic character in a relatable way and I especially love the positive portrayal of therapy and the need for a strong support network of friends and family.
If you’re looking for a fun, heartfelt, and downright hilarious TV show to binge, then Atypical might be the show for you. You might even learn a thing or two about penguins and Antarctica.
The first three seasons of Atypical are now streaming on Netflix with the final season slated to come out in 2021.
